Details
Mataro, aka Mourvedre. What a wine. Yes, it's from the McLaren Vale, so there's plenty of upfront fruit and power, but it kind of morphs into something easy and juicy and fun. Plenty of dark red fruits - mulberry, cranberry, even plum....mixed in with cinnamon, clove and a touch of chocolate. Really floral as well. Finishes with a distinctly savoury bent, meat and earth wrapped around tannin and acid. Great stuff.

Luke Growden and Caleigh Hunt are the husband and wife behind Year Wines. Theirs is a story of love, family and opportunity When Luke met Caleigh whilst working as a lowly cellar hand, it was love at first sight. Eight years, two kids and a wine label later, they are producing some gorgeous small-batch wines together. They started Year Wines in 2012, making tiny amounts of wine that has slowly grown. They exist in the heart of the McLaren Vale, surrounded by old vineyards and a short trip from the sea. The surf and sand and clay and heat are all noticeable in their wines, just as they would want it to be. Theirs is a minimal intervention approach to winemaking - their wines are wild fermented and bottled unfined and unfiltered in order to capture the year in which they were grown and the provenance of the vineyards. This is project driven by heart, sweat and passion.....thankfully, it's paying off.

Pairing guide
Here’s a red wine we’re sure you’ll be seeing plenty more of in recent years, and one which never fails to please when it comes to food pairing with rich and savoury dishes. We love this Mataro red wine with stuffed mushrooms oozing with cheese and topped with fragrant breadcrumbs, but to be honest, it’s every bit as good with a simple rare steak and chips. Mataro and duck is never a bad choice, and you’ll find it’s also a great match for meat pies, beetroot dishes, and other earthy roasted vegetables.
