Details
Alvarinho is undoubtedly known for its ubiquitous presence in northern Portugal, so we were intrigued when we discovered one from as far down south as the Tejo wine region. Suffice it to say this does not disappoint. It's a little riper and plumper around the edges but still offers that typical freshness and acidity we want to see from this grape variety.
Quinta do Casal Branco is a brand new addition for us here at Good Pair Days and an impressive producer discovered back in 2023 during a trip out to Portugal in search of vinous gold. Impressed by the wines from the Tejo region - a true up-and-coming part of the country - this is the land of the Fernão Pires and Castelão grapes, both of which are indigenous to the region. The Tejo is a remarkable terroir, with vineyards formed largely from old riverbeds made up of sandy-stony soils. The team at Quinta do Casal Branco are a traditional one for sure. The 18th-century estate is stunning, with around 128 hectares under vine, cultivating a host of grape varieties with the aforementioned, plus Syrah leading the way. We are delighted to have finally landed these wines, they are certainly not to be missed!

Pairing guide
Alvarinho wines are right up there with our all-time favourite white wine styles, and not least because of how well they pair with some of our favourite dishes and ingredients. This Portuguese white wonder is beautiful with simple grilled fish dishes, sardine dips, seared seafood or shellfish pasta, or a heaving plate of good ol’ fish and chips. Chicken salads and peri-peri favourites, leafy greens and even pork with lemon and parsley will work well, too.
