Details
Gelber Muskateller is known for its intense, 'musky' aromatics, and this wine does not stray from that path. This is stunning, with heady notes of yellow tropicals with an herbal white pepper undertow. This is clean and pure, with so much crystalline fruit. Very fresh and concentrated, with a touch of spritz upon opening that'll blow off after a few minutes in the glass.

Still 100% family-owned and family-run, Familie Mantler began when eighteen-year-old Karl Mantler established the winery back in the 1950s. Three generations later, it continues to thrive under the watchful eye of his son, Thomas, who is often humorously referred to as the “CEO and cleaning lady”. Thomas' refreshing, hands-on approach to the daily running of the estate sees him overseeing all of the winemaking operations, working the vineyards and even helping with local deliveries. He is a winemaker whose expertise and experience are expressed through the lens of his remarkable value-for-money range of wines. The family works with the classic Austrian varieties one might expect; such as Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and of course, Zweigelt (the latter) for their reds. One variety of particular note however is Roter Veltliner. This bears no relation to Grüner and has somewhat waned in the shadow of the aforementioned more popular whites in Austria in recent years. Nevertheless, Thomas and co have persisted and dare we say, nailed a tidy Roter worthy of gracing the finest of palates. The team also practise organic viticulture.

Pairing guide
If you’re not already a fan of Gelber Muskateller wines, you’re in for a treat. If you’re already well-versed in this rather lesser-known Germanic variety, you’ll need no further convincing - this bottle is an absolute beauty! It’s also brilliant for pairing with hearty home-cooked fare like roast pork chops with caramelised onions, as well as with fried chicken, sushi and tonkatsu, white fish with plenty of green herbs, curried monkfish and goat’s cheese salads.
