Details
This fabulous red from Cerrón is a brilliant purple in the glass. With meaty notes that one comes to expect from this grape type, we also have purple fruit, potpourri and liquorice notes. This is inky and rich, with a pencil-shaving, graphite accent on the finish.
Bodegas Cerrón, located in Fuente Álamo, Albacete, Spain, is a winery known for its commitment to regenerative viticulture and adapting to climate change. The winery has gained recognition for its exceptional wines, with critics praising their vibrant and energetic cuvées made from Monastrell grapes blended with other varieties like Blanquilla, Bobal, Forcallat, and Moravia Agria. Bodega Cerrón's focus on sustainable practices and winemaking is evident in their vineyards, as they aim to improve soil health and biodiversity to cope with the challenges posed by climate change in an already very warm part of the Country. The wines are made broadly under the banner of the Jumilla D.O., and overall, this young, pragmatic and forward-thinking team stands out as a winery that not only produces high-quality wines but also prioritises sustainability and innovation in winemaking practices, making it a notable player in the Spanish wine scene.

Pairing guide
All those rich tannins and thrilling astringent characters make this Monastrell the perfect choice of wine for when big, bold flavours are on the table. It’s a great choice for fattier meats like ribeye steak, leg of lamb or lamb shanks in gravy, as well as for deeply savoury slow-cooked ragu sauces with spaghetti or polenta. We also reckon it’s a great match for a porcini and lentil bolognese and other veggie versions of Italian favourites, as well as richer mushroom dishes, earthy sausages and aged hard cheeses.

Wine region

Jumilla, Spain
Despite its hot and harsh conditions, Jumilla has a long history of wine production, with evidence of vine cultivation dating back to the ancient Roman Empire. The Jumilla wine region is located in the southeast of Spain, in the province of Murcia (2.5 hours drive South of Valencia). Jumilla is hot and dry! Thankfully, the high lime content of the soils retains the necessary moisture for often unirrigated vines; the other saving grace is the elevation between 400-800m – offering cool evening respite for the vines. The region is particularly famous for its powerful and rich red wines such as Monastrell and international varieties Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. White varieties like Airen, Macabeo, Pedro Ximénez and Malvasia are also worth a look!
