Details
Bright gold, with a little natural unfiltered cloudiness, this skin-contact Semillon is grassy and herbaceous, with freshly-cut apricot and a honeyed accent. The palate is light but flavour intense; it’s savoury, textural, chalky and steely all at the same time, and finishes on a high of grapefruit zest. A super-modern wine made with not so much ‘back to the future’, but ‘forward to the past’ biodynamic principles.

Walsh & Sons is a small outfit run by Ryan Walsh and Freya Hohnen, who come from wine and farming families - Freya is the daughter of David Hohnen, founder of Cape Mentelle winery - and have been helping out in the vineyards since they were children. As adults, they honed their skills travelling wine regions throughout France, USA, Spain and Switzerland, before returning home to the Margaret River to make wines focused on technique over technology; wines that retain the raw personalities and flavours from their natural ingredients. Using biodynamic principles in the vineyard, they produce wines that are light, fun, youthful and different to the mainstream. The Walsh & Sons project is all about family too; their own children and their nieces and nephews are the inspiration for the names of each of the wines. Fun times here, and from a bastion of tradition at that… Margaret River is not often known for putting fun before formula, but Walsh & Sons is bucking that trend most definitively!

Pairing guide
When it comes to food pairing with this delightful skin contact wine from Walsh & Sons, it’s best to look to the cuisines of Greece, Turkey, Morocco and elsewhere around the Middle East. Not only do these food cultures work wonders with lamb (and lamb with orange wine is never a bad idea), they combine it with other Orange wine-friendly ingredients such as feta or halloumi cheese, couscous, chickpeas, freekeh, fresh herbs and hummus. If that doesn’t float your boat, you can’t go wrong pairing this wine with roast chicken, grilled oily fish, or a homemade cauliflower soup. Yum!
