Details
The Vinuva Primitivo is veritable winter in a glass, starting with an inviting deep, rich purple colour and super-ripe fruits of the forest and liquorice aromas. It’s full-bodied, with a luscious big fruit-driven palate, but then cleans up with crunchy acidity and chalky gripping tannins. A definite food wine, optional scarf wine!

Puglia, in the deep south of Italy (the 'heel' of the boot') is home to a great variety of relatively lesser-known grape varieties that produce a satisfying range of incredible value and characterful wines. Overshadowed by many of their more famous wine regions, it is nonetheless a great place to discover comforting reds and the odd salty white that make for great drinking. Vinuva is a range of excellent value, certified organic wines from regions in southern Italy, made under the auspices of the Enoitaly group. Quintessentially Puglia in a bottle, the Vinuva Primitivo is from Puglia’s Salento region, a peninsula located right on the heel of Italy’s boot. Vinuva says their wines need little introduction, as ‘once they have reached the palate, they have said everything about themselves!’ Primitivo, also known as Zinfandel, is a big bear-hug of a wine: it’s a dark skinned grape, producing robust, rustic reds that are high in tannin and acidity, and have buckets of ripe, rich berry and cherry fruits.

Pairing guide
Primitivo is an often underrated Italian red variety, but it’s one that simply cannot be ignored when it comes to food pairing perfection. This elegant bottle from Vinuva is a fantastic example of what this grape does best, and it’s going to pair with some amazingly tasty dishes. We loved it with Italian favourites like eggplant parmigiana, pasta with roasted vegetables, a classic puttanesca, or a meaty pizza, but you’ll also get superb results from a lamb curry, roast capsicums, Moroccan tagine, chilli con carne, or moussaka!

Wine region
Puglia, Italy
Puglia is a wine region in the "heel" of Italy that is known for its red, white, and rosé wines. The full-bodied red wines are often made with Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes, while the whites are usually made with Verdeca and Fiano grapes. Puglia has a hot, sunny climate which helps the grapes ripen fully and gives the wines a rich flavour. The region is also home to some unique grape varieties, like Nero di Troia and Bombino Nero. So, if you're a fan of Italian wine, definitely give Puglia a try! Historically Puglia has been better known for its quantity of wine over its quality. But thanks to a number of quality-focused producers, the region is turning that narrative around.
