Details
The Gambler Gamay is a spot on take of everything you’d expect from this grape variety. Made in a classic Cab-Mac style which produces plenty of bright and crunchy fruit that is humming along nicely with some olive and gamey meat notes. The brightness in this wine carries along nicely as it really starts to take off over a meal of lean meat.

Mark and Jen Vella are farmers first and foremost, churning out high end grapes for years on end as well as managing cattle on their property. For this duo, it was a case of supplying wineries with stunning Adelaide Hills fruit for years on end before finally biting the bullet and having a crack at turning grapes into wine. The great thing when vigneron becomes winemaker is that they know their produce better than anyone, and just like any Michelin star chef, they get to work with the best produce. Today Mark and Jen are producing a small range of wines from their own vineyards with a focus on two leading Adelaide Hills varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as well as a couple of up and coming varieties, Pinot Blanc and Gamay. Gamay is the hottest property right now, with any millennial winemaker selling the vintage 1980s t-shirt off their back for a few buckets of the stuff. Luckily Mark gambled on Gamay becoming something one day and he now has enough vines to keep him happy as well as a growing collection of second hand t-shirts.

Pairing guide
Who could resist the fruity charms of this beautiful Gamay by Vella Wines(here’s a hint: it’s definitely not us). This delightful wine is sure to pair fantastically well with roast chicken and other poultry, as well as with casseroles, pies, and pasta sauces making good use of chicken thighs and game birds. Homemade burgers, simple steak and chips, and meats paired with fruity reductions will hit the high notes, and it’s also great with roasted red capsicums, autumnal veggies like pumpkin and squash, and dishes packing in herbal flavours of rosemary and sage.

Wine region
Adelaide Hills, Australia
The Adelaide Hills wine region, located in South Australia's Mount Lofty Ranges of South Australia is characterised by its high altitude, cool climate, and diverse soils, which all contribute to the unique terroir that produces elegant, complex, and expressive wines. The region's altitude ranges from 400 to 700 meters above sea level, creating a cooler climate than other wine regions in South Australia. The cool temperatures slow down the ripening process of the grapes, resulting in wines with high acidity, delicate aromatics, and elegant flavours. Top sub-regions are Lenswood, Piccadilly Valley, and Basket Range, each with unique microclimates and diverse soil types that produce singular wine styles, the highlights are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and a whole lot more!
