Details
Rioja is a region famed by ageing its red for extended periods in oak, resulting in ethereal and layered wines, often of great depth. Not always considered 'fresh' when made this way, here is an example that captures the best of both worlds. Classic yet simultaneously alive, with a wonderfully earthy nose revealing layers of mulberry, dark cherry, tobacco and herbs. The structured palate envelopes with considerable tannins that are close knit and altogether ripe and ready. If you've got a decanter, then go for it - this is a complex wine worth tasting over time.

The Spanish region of Rioja has a reputation that more than precedes itself, carrying with it the glories of several centuries of fine winemaking and some of the most sought-after bottles on Earth. Valenciso, a winery run since 1998 between Luis Valentin and Carmen Enciso, are driven to not only uphold that reputation, but to blend tradition and modernity in the pursuit of perfection. Working with low-yielding Tempranillo vines in the Rioja Alta appellations, Luis and Carmen meticulously oversee every aspect of the winemaking process. Aiming for elegance and approachability, coupled with just enough complexity and class to keep things interesting, their wines pack in a smoothness and velvety softness that goes above and beyond expectations of a Rioja Alta winery. Chemical intervention is kept to a minimum to ensure the best qualities of the fruit come forward in the glass, and aging French and American oak barriques guarantees a sophisticated finish we just can’t get enough of!

Pairing guide
Truly elegant, complex, and thrillingly multi-layered, this Reserva Tempranillo wine unfailingly evokes the landscapes of northern Spain, where this noble grape varietal reigns supreme. This wine is simply wonderful for pairing with flavourful dishes featuring paprika, pimenton, and the sweet-spicy taste of red capsicum and milder red chillies. Lamb is the obvious meat pairing here - lamb chops, legs, tagines, moussaka, and merguez sausages are all fantastic choices - and it’s a great wine to pair with slow-cooked brisket and other barbecue favourites.

Wine region
Rioja, Spain
Rioja (riˈouhɑ) is one of Spain’s most well-known wine regions, located in the north of Spain. The region has a long history of making wine that dates back to the period of the Roman Empire. The climate is typically Mediterranean with hot summers and cool winters which suits the varieties of Rioja; Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano. Graciano almost became extinct due to the effects of phylloxera in the late 1800s however, luckily, the variety is back in full swing. There are three main classifications of wine according to their ageing process- Crianza, Reserve and Gran Reserva.
