Details
Portugal's most recognised variety. Touriga explodes with a fistful of rose, violets and hints of chocolate. Is it Valentine's already? Rich black and blue fruits on the palate juxtapose the grippy tannin. A sumptuous lingering finish with some tasteful oak tucked away. Enjoy.

Origin: Douro, in northern Portugal. Mainly Grown In: Pretty much everywhere in Portugal, a few places across the border in Spain, but rarely elsewhere. Key Facts: A serious, noble, slightly wild grape, Touriga is one of the best grapes you've never heard of. Except you have, because it's the main grape variety used for the production of the famous fortified wine style, Port! It's obscurity is slowly changing however, with more of it being planted across Australia. It's a pretty hefty grape, offering up masses of blueberry and blackberry. It's always floral, so look out for notes of violet or lavender as well. It loves a bit of oak, and the spices from that intertwine nicely with fruit. Full bodied, charry and complex, it's a wonderful addition to your wine library. Fun Fact: Touriga Nacional is the full name of this legendary grape variety! It just gets shortened to Touriga because it wants to fit in with Cab Sav and Sav Blanc.

Pairing guide
Touriga Nacional is one of Portugal’s signature grapes, and it’s been given a whole new lease of life grown in Australia’s gorgeous Riverland region. This characterful red is ideal served with smoked and cured meats - chorizo and other spiced sausages will work a treat - and with traditional Portuguese or Spanish pork stews. Whole roast chicken or turkey, Moroccan tagines and Creole gumbo dishes will be great, as will grilled ribs, homemade burgers and roast red capsicums.

Wine region
Riverland, Australia
Located in the heart of South Australia, the Riverland wine region is a tropical paradise for wine lovers. The region was formerly known for its traditional wines, particularly Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Grenache as well as its abundance of sunshine and beautiful scenery. In the last few years it's added a raft of Mediterranean varieties to its charm - think Fiano and Nero d'Avola. The warm climate and fertile soils of the Riverland make it a perfect place for grape growing, and the wines produced there are bursting with flavour. So why not explore the wines of the Riverland and discover a new favourite?
