Details
A sumptuous wine, filled with loads of dark fruit and spices. The difference here is that all that powerful fruit is tempered by the classic bitterness of this grape variety, Aglianico, which originally hails from central and southern Italy. Every had a Terry's Choc Orange? There's a heap of that going on here, plus waves of gritty tannin that wash over your palate to prepare it for the next glass. Epic.

Good things come to those who wait and for sure Ashley & Holly Ratcliff, the couple behind Ricca Terra have spent some time to create their own wines. During decades of work in the Industry, Ashley picked up the Best Viticulturist award one year. So basically if you’re a grape in Australia you want to be grown by Ashley. With an eye for sustainability the couple have planted and purchased in Barmera in South Australia. The Riverland is an area that gets lots of sun but not much rain; many of the vineyards are irrigated heavily. With pressure on water supply in Australia they have identified grapes that work best in warmer, mediterranean climates that demand less water. Plantings of Nero d’Avola, Vermentino and so on are planted over their ten different sites to create their unique and interesting wines. Understanding of climate and marrying the vineyards to the best possible grape varieties while reducing water demand they hope to create some of the best vineyards in Australia.

Pairing guide
A good bottle of Aglianico is always a welcome addition to any dining table, and this release from regular GPD faves Ricca Terra is no exception. It’s a great wine to pair with hearty game meats like ‘roo, rabbit and venison, and it’ll work well with slow-cooked cuts of lamb shoulder, duck legs and beef, too. We loved it with a sausage and lentil casserole, but it will be equally good with veggie dishes putting beans and bitter greens like kale in the spotlight, as well as with mushrooms, eggplant and mature cheddar cheese.

The region was formerly known for its traditional wines, particularly Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Grenache as well as its abundance of sunshine and beautiful scenery. In the last few years it's added a raft of Mediterranean varieties to its charm - think Fiano and Nero d'Avola. The warm climate and fertile soils of the Riverland make it a perfect place for grape growing, and the wines produced there are bursting with flavour.
