Details
Oh yeah, this is a heavyweight, landing weighty punches of powerful, but classy Coonawarra flavour at every turn. Dripping in gold medals and all that sort of bling, this mature Cabernet Sauvignon has acres of dark fruit, bold choc-vanilla oak and then tannins for days. For all that impact, it's still a classy, silken character with refinement to match that swagger. It's a wine to plonk down on the table and slay everyone who has a sip.

The Reschke family has been farming the land around Coonawarra since the early 1900s, famously setting up a prime Hereford stud in the area. Vines didn't appear on the farm until the late 1980s when fourth-generation family member Burke Reschke started growing grapes that were very well received by local winemakers. Wines followed sometime later, but the Reschke family were growers first and foremost, so its quality grapes that are the real heroes. Flash forward to the modern era, and the Reschke wines—complete with the bull on the front, a nod to the family heritage—continue to impress with their big-boned power and intensity. These are typically luscious red wines (and the occasional white) made from Coonawarra grapes with a smattering from adjoining Limestone Coast regions. Notably, the wines are often released with a bit more age on them, which just amplifies the interest and complexity.

Pairing guide
A good bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon is always hard to beat when it comes to pairing with richly flavoured, hearty dishes. This release from Reschke packs a deeply satisfying punch of tannic character, making it ideal for big steak dinners, leg of lamb in red wine sauce, game meats with berry reductions or wild mushrooms, and layered potato dishes with mature cheddar or blue cheese. Roast eggplant with miso, grilled root vegetables, risotto with truffle and smoked Christmas ham will also pair beautifully. Give it a try and see for yourself!

Wine region
Coonawarra, Australia
Coonawarra is in the southeastern corner of South Australia, located in the Limestone Coast of South Australia, about 300 km southeast of Adelaide. The region experiences a maritime influence due to the upwelling of cold ocean currents. The main varieties grown in the region are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, and Chardonnay. Here you can find the legendary terra rossa soil, with its thin iron-oxide-based topsoil over limestone, giving it that unmistakable reddish hue. This soil type is believed to be a major contributing factor to the robust character of the wines. The Coonawarra wine region stretches about 15 km, with more than 50 wineries. Penfolds, Wynns, Balnaves, Rymil and Katnook Estate are among the most notable and historic in the region. Each of them produces highly sought Cabernet Sauvignon that is medium to full-bodied, with brood notes of cassis, blackberry, plum and dark cherry flavours. Structured with firm but plush tannins, the very best of them cellar gracefully for decades.
