Details
This is Bryan Martin's OG orange wine based on the ramato style skin contact Pinot Gris wines of NE Italy. The seven months reference here is a nod to the time this wine spends in anfora (or amphora, depending on your Euro language of choice), before then spending another 15 months in oak. All of that winemaking work leads to a pretty cerebral wine - it's tangy, with this sour cherry and lemon puckering pluckiness, life-affirming bitterness and this wonderful contrast between fruit and tartness. Fascinating stuff!
Although small, Ravensworth is already on the verge of becoming an iconic Australian winery. This is quite remarkable, given the lack of pretension of the owner and winemaker Bryan Martin. For over 15 years, Bryan has built a formidable reputation as the head winemaker at legendary Clonakilla in Canberra; it was here that he crafted some of this country's greatest cool-climate Syrahs whilst simultaneously setting up his own project. In 2020, Ravensworth completed its winery and cellar, which is filled with impressive structures of large-format oak, ceramic eggs, Italian Amphorae, and custom concrete monoliths—all unique vessels for wines to harmonise until they are ready for release. The Ravensworth range is now jam-packed with unique NSW wines from Canberra and all over NSW. Additionally, Bryan is also seriously adept in the kitchen, with a legendary appreciation for nose-to-tail cooking (hence the beasts you might spot on the Ravensworth label).

Pairing guide
How did we ever get by without skin contact wines? We’re huge fans of orange wines here at Good Pair Days, and the team at Ravensworth have worked wonders with their Canberra District grapes to produce a bottle that seriously satisfies the senses. When it comes to food pairing, we always love how well orange wines match with Middle Eastern dishes and flavours - lamb or chicken tagine, couscous with dried fruit and spices, homemade hummus and baba ganoush will all work brilliantly. Vegetarian pasta dishes, any savoury recipe with almonds and walnuts, grilled vegetables and seared scallops with butter sauce are also highly recommended.

Wine region

Canberra District, Australia
Canberra wine district is located in and around the Australian Capital Territory. Apart from one producer in ACT, this wine district is commonly associated with NSW regions Murrumbateman, Bungendore and Collector. Being inland, the region has an extreme continental climate, with very warm days and typically cold dry nights even in Summer. Riesling thrives in this climate, the stand-out variety among the crisp whites available here. But it's the cool-climate Shiraz that steals the show. Actually, Canberra wine district has a well-established reputation for one of Australia’s best Shiraz – notably Clonakilla’s Shiraz Viognier.
The wine region is a bit of a best-kept secret, if only Sydneysiders knew it to be equidistant to Hunter Valley! Canberra wine bars and restaurants here have generated quite the buzz in recent years, and with vineyards just a 30 minute drive from Canberra city; why not enjoy both in a day? Halliday hitters include Clonakilla, Helm (Riesling), and Lark Hill (Gruner Veltliner), but don’t miss out on the envelope-pushing producers such as Ravensworth, Mallaluka, and Mada Wines! Don’t sleep on the Canberra Wine District!
