Origin: The first recognised wines were made in the Rhône Valley and south-eastern France. Mainly Grown In: One of the world’s leading grapes, it is found in France, Australia, the USA, Argentina and South Africa. Key Facts: Shiraz is a world-beater. Starting small in the southern reaches of France, it has spread to all corners of the world, and is known for producing some of the world’s great red wines, capable of perfume, power and persistence. Local versions are luscious and fruity, loaded with plum, raisin and plenty of oaky richness. European expressions however can be more savoury and tend towards flavours of olive, black cherry and pepper. Both are equally delicious, and are simply a matter of taste! Fun Fact: The first Shiraz vines made their way to Australia in James Busby’s 1832 collection. Recognised as the father of Australian wine, Busby travelled through Spain and France collecting vine cuttings that were the foundation of the Australian wine industry.

Pairing guide
A good Shiraz is always a great addition to any barbecue, dinner party or solo dinner, and this beautiful wine never fails to delight the senses! It’s best paired with smoky flavours - barbecued and chargrilled meat is an obvious choice, and it’s superb with barbecue classics like blackened chicken and brisket. Homemade burgers, shashlik, ribs and deeply savoury stews and casseroles will be perfect pairings, and it’s also delicious with smoked tofu, roast eggplant and root vegetables, bean and lentil dishes and brown rice with smoked paprika.

The region received the effects of the Bonney Upwelling which is a current that cools the water off the coast of Mount Benson, somewhat reducing the effects of global warming in the region. There are some high quality wineries like Norfolk Rise and Cape Jaffa highlight the region's best varieties.
