Details
Grown at Tarrington, near Henty in Victoria, comes Owen Latta’s latest Pinot Gris subtitled ‘creation out of nothing’; with twelve hours of skin contact, it is pale pink with a fragrance of stone fruit and mineral, and is quite savoury. Delicious, soft and gentle, and very, very easy to drink.
From great challenges arise great results; Latta Vino is a pretty good example of this, being a winery born of an unusual history and with a dedication to producing characterful and unexpected wines. Owen Latta is the son of Norman Latta, the man who established Eastern Peake winery, but due to an accident had to give up winemaking when Owen was still a teenager. Young Owen didn't shirk, and threw himself into the task. Fast forward to today, and Owen is one of the most respected young winemakers in Australia, his family winery better than ever, and his own label Latta at the cutting edge of Australian wine. Owen’s vision was a particular one: to work with the diverse and occasionally difficult soils of Coghills Creek and surrounding areas to produce wines to be proud of. Small yields, challenging seasons and natural, sustainable methods were the way forward, and before long the wines began to speak for themselves. They now sit proudly at the summit of Victorian wines - fresh, fragrant and complex, with an undertow of savouriness and seriousness.

Pairing guide
When it comes to enjoying a light lunch on a sunny day, few wines hit the spot quite like a chilled Pinot Gris. This gorgeous number is a stunning example of varietal character, and will pair exceptionally well with European favourites including vegetable risotto, olio e aglio, moules mariniere and roast whole chicken. Turkey breast, grain-based salads, oily fish like sardines and anchovies, and anything featuring olives, artichoke hearts, and green peas are all highly recommended, too.

Wine region

Henty, Australia
Henty is a cool region conceived by Chief Viticulturist Karl Seppelt in 1964. Originally Henty was known only as prime grazing terrain, full of undulating hills, much like the rest of western Victoria, for quality wool! Nowadays, Riesling is hands down the stand-out variety in this region. Still, you can also find excellent cool climate renditions of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Shiraz Viognier, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Steady ripening in autumn, low but high-quality yields results in elegant and intensely flavourful wines. The Henty wine region encompasses a large part of Victoria, extending from the SA border of Coonawarra east to Hopkins River (Warrnambool longitude). Major subregions are Hamilton, think the textural delight that is Lethbridge Wines and Tarrington, the hard-to-say but easy to drink Hochkirch Wines. Yum!
