Details
The French sure do love their Merlot and La Vicomté is one that takes great pride in the Merlot they produce. This is a fine example with dark fruited notes, with blackberries and plums bursting through. Behind the fruit, there is some black tea, vanilla and spice drive to give this Merlot some lovely complexity.
The wine world is a big, wide world that can be difficult to navigate from time to time. Luckily there are people in the industry like Camille, that are happy to open the doors to wineries that might otherwise be missed. La Vicomté is one of those wineries, located in the Languedoc they have a host of grapes to utilise and the wherewithal to make smart, modern wines that are ideal for the Australian market. The beauty of the Languedoc is that there are less restrictions about what wines they can make, so the winery portfolio is extensive. They have a range of different wines, from classic French varieties like Viognier, Vermentino and Grenache Gris, to more fascinating wines like their ‘Cépage Resistant’ range which focuses on varieties like Floréal and Souvignier Gris, that are sustainable, rely less on pesticides and help preserve the biodiversity of the soil. Beside the good planet story, they also make great wine across the board for you to enjoy at home.

Pairing guide
Despite a decade in the doldrums, Merlot is well and truly back on all our favourite wine lists, and we couldn’t be happier about it. This luscious and rather decadent bottle from La Vicomté really delivers when it comes to juicy, jammy flavours, and offers a mountain of fantastic food pairing options to explore. Merlot is often happiest with juicy red meats served with some kind of fruity sauce or side - think duck breast with plums, turkey with cranberry, pork with apple, or venison with wild berries. It’s also great with slightly caramelised roasted vegetables (especially carrots and parsnips) and loves the aromatic punch of garlic and parsley.

It is the largest wine-producing region in France and is known for its wide variety of wine styles, including red, white, rosé, and sparkling. As a younger region, Languedoc has less restrictive wine growing laws making it a virtual oasis for progressive winemakers. As a result, you may find many innovative, even atypical blends in this region, that represent excellent value. Of the numerous varieties available in Languedoc Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Viognier are the stand outs. Top producers are known showcasing the unique character of the Languedoc region, including Mas de Daumas Gassac, Château de Saint-Martin, Mas Jullien, and Château d'Angles.
