Details
This is made from Malvasia Riojana, a less aromatic local clone of the famous Malvasia. And no, we're not in Rioja, but Valencia. Don't be confused, just sip slowly on this rich yet fresh white that presents all manner of nutty goodness - almond and sesame, apricot and lemon. Round and soft with enough acidity to hold things steady.
La Comarcal (The Local) is based in the mountainous village of Venta del Moro, part of the wine region of Valencia. It’s the project of close friends, Javi Revert and Victor Marques, who met as young makers at one of the iconic wineries of the region, Celler del Roure, where they worked together for over a decade. La Comarcal attempts to combine the intensity with which both Victor and Javi work (focussing on regenerative farming practices, keeping to the heritage varietals of Valencia, old vines and terroir expressiveness), with what they see as their personal characters; an unflustered calmness considered typical of the people of the Mediterranean coast. The result is La Comarcal - fresh, vibrant, gluggable wine produced with all of the care and attention to detail in farming and wine making that Javi uses in his own personal project or Victor maintains at Celler del Roure. The kicker? A laidback price tag and a thoroughly vinous style that suggests more seriousness than the labels do! All four wines they produce are made using native yeasts, organic farming with some biodynamic treatments and no additions other than small amounts of sulphur. They are delicious expressions of modern Spanish farming and winemaking, from traditional varieties of the region.

Pairing guide
We couldn’t help but be blown away by the beautiful flavours and character of this stunning Malvasia Riojana from La Comarcal - it’s a stunning example of what Norther Spanish wineries do best, and a real delight for any fans of this wine style. If you’re on the lookout for the perfect food pairing, you’d do worse than to match it up with a hearty dish of crab linguine or lobster with a portion of spiced butter. Pork chops with garlic and herbs, peri-peri chicken, curried vegetables and spicy tofu will also work a treat.
