Details
The ‘Tearz’ is an interesting wine to start with, it’s not quite a white wine and not quite a red wine so let’s put it in the middle. Firstly, it is made from Pinot Noir, yet without the skins, so effectively treated like a white wine. The result is a mix of strawberries and cherries along with a crunchy palate with red apple skin and biscuity notes.
Dave Mackintosh is a New Zealander who plied his trade in Australia for over 15 years, making exciting wines under the Arfion label in the Yarra Valley. After a decent stint in oz, Dave and his family decided to make the move back home to Auckland. On returning home, he started Kenzie wines, which is a nod to his great-grandmother who was the first generation to move from their ancestral home of Scotland to New Zealand during the 1930s. The wines are made in Hawkes Bay, a stunningly beautiful region in the southern half of the north island. The first thing to note with the Kenzie wines is their artistic and colourful labels, which Dave creates himself. There is a growing range of wines, all made under the same umbrella of minimal intervention, small batch wines with a high attention to detail. There is everything from Albarino to classic Hawkes Bay Syrah to skinsy orange wines.

Pairing guide
A minimal-intervention pink wine from one of New Zealand’s premier wine regions? Don’t mind if we do. This beautiful rosé is a stunning choice for pairing with a light lunch, beach barbecue or evening meal alike, and will match particularly well with dishes featuring heartier fish options like salmon and tuna, or with cured pork products including pancetta, prosciutto or salami. Grilled sausages, rich stews of chorizo and squid, rack of lamb served pink with roasted vegetables, and traybakes with orzo, cherry tomatoes and fresh herbs are also great pairings to explore.

Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
Hawke's Bay wine region is located in the eastern part of New Zealand's North Island, and is known for its warm, dry climate and diverse range of soils. It is home to the famous Gimblett Gravels sub-region, which has free-draining, stony soils that are ideal for growing Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The top wine styles produced in Hawke's Bay include Chardonnay, Syrah, and Bordeaux-style blends, which all thrive in the region's warm and dry conditions. The top sub-regions within Hawke's Bay include not only Gimblett Gravels but also the Bridge Pa Triangle and Te Awanga regions, which are known for their glorious Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
