Details
2020 saw a year of bushfires devastating vineyards across the North East, including Beechworth's finest. Fighting Gully Road was no exception, so in an attempt to keep the vintage 'alive', fruit was sourced elsewhere. Pinot Noir from the Mornington - a wine likely never to be made again, but boy, is it glorious. A nose of chewy Pinot notes - sweet red cherries intermingling with herbs over a background of sandalwood spice. Wonderful!
The visionary vintner behind Fighting Gully Road, Mark Walpole, is quoted as saying that he has never been content with the status quo, and goes out of his way to do things differently. It shows. He’s widely regarded as one of Australia’s most talented viticulturalists, and his projects up on the Beechworth plateau reveal an extraordinary array of grape varieties - some of which are barely pronounceable, let alone recognisable. Ehrenfelser, Odola, Saperavi… all grapes grown at Fighting Gully Road, and used in Walpole’s remarkable blends which take the familiar and turn them on their head. Of all the varieties, Sangiovese has Mark's heart. However, the array of varieties planted that he works with, are tested, adapted, understood... and the only the finest varietal expressions are ever created. Beechworth is an exciting region, and FGR are leading the way forward.

Pairing guide
GDP favourites Fighting Gully Road continue to amaze with this remarkable Pinot Noir, which matches elegance with authenticity and an astonishing food-friendliness. We loved this wine with a big bowl of boeuf bourguignon, but any deep and meaty stew will do the business with real panache. Roasted root vegetables, lentil and bean dishes, roast duck legs or a pan-roasted duck breast, whole chicken dinners, and family favourites like cottage pie, moussaka, sausage casserole and chilli con carne will also hit the spot in style.

Wine region

Mornington Peninsula, Australia
Just an hour's drive south of Melbourne is the Pinot Paradise, also known as Mornington Peninsula.
The signature variety of the region is, without a doubt, Pinot Noir, accounting for over half of the region’s vines, followed by Chardonnay at 25% and Pinot Gris at 20%. Pinot Noir from this region is typically characterised by its refreshing acidity and purity. The deep colour may lead you to think these wines are potent, but in reality, the wines are elegant, pretty and medium-bodied at best.
Surrounded by Bass Strait, Port Phillip Bay and Western Port Bay in Victoria, Mornington Peninsula’s climate is uniquely maritime cool and breezy. In fact, no vineyard is further than 7km from the ocean! Some of the most notable producers in the Mornington Peninsula include Kooyong, Ten Minutes by Tractor, Stonier Wines and boutique wineries such as Montalto, Ocean Eight, and Quealy Wines.
