Details
We all know and love Tempranillo - dark, serious and spicy. But spring and summer in Australia don't always lend themselves to knocking back a big glass of heavy red. Sometimes you want something a little fresher. That's where Early Rider comes in - juicy, jubey, bright fruit, redolent of freshly squished berries. Sure, it has a bit of Tempranillo grit, but it's juicy, fun to drink and we think is the perfect warm-weather red.

Richard & Mal Leask are the winemaking brains (who also happen to be brothers) behind '10 years in the making overnight sensation' wine label Hither & Yon. They got to where they are today by sheer hard work and passion, as well as a focus on the fruit that makes the wine. In fact it's this zeal for great viticulture that probably shines brightest. With plenty of hard work, Scottish grit and determination, and a passion for modern winemaking, Richard and Malcolm managed to set up a unique winery which put flavour and fruit front and centre. They named their operation ‘Hither & Yon’, in reference to the annual game of hide-and-seek they believe they play with the landscape each harvest season. Here at GPD, we love what they do. So much so, we decided to team up with them and make a serious red wine that is perfect for spring evenings. It's a young, easy-going Tempranillo that pulls in all that Tempranillo flavour, but in a more supple, slinkier mould. Low on oak, moderate alcohol and a gentle tannin structure mean this is ready to go from a young age.

Pairing guide
You really can’t beat a bottle of Tempranillo at mealtimes, and this release from Early Rider perfectly captures everything we love about this varietal. It’s going to be fantastic with barbecued and grilled red meats, rich ragùs, and family mealtime classics like spag bol or chilli con carne. Any deeply savoury stew or hotpot will fit the bill perfectly, and it’s going to taste especially good with rustic Spanish-style stews of slow cooked pork, pimento, and tomatoes.
