Details
Bobal is the local red variety of Penedes, and one that Dominio de La Vega places a lot of value in. The ‘Tinto de Abel’ is like walking through a forest while smoking a cigar, with some leafy and woody notes with layers of spice and cigar box. Underneath there is a lovely note of maraschino cherry with some rounded, soft tannins.

Located in the heart of Penedes, which for those playing at home, is Cava country, home to the key spanish wine region for sparkling wines. Cava is typically made from the indigenous varieties, Macabeu, Parellada and Xarel·lo, yet aside from the golden fizz that comes from this region, there is also a host of other varieties that have a home in this part of Spain. Enter Dominio de La Vega, who not only makes exceptional Cava, but also focus on still wines and in particular the local red variety, Bobal. Dominio de La Vega have been making wine in Penedes for over 40 years, with a key focus on Bobal as well as producing various styles of Cava and of course a few white wines. Their Bobal is made into several styles of red wines as well as a very delicious rosé. The winery focuses on organic methods in the vineyard as well as clean, modern packaging that is sure to draw your attention.

Pairing guide
Bobal wines, like this little beauty from Dominio de la Vega, are having a bit of a moment this year. We absolutely loved this rich and characterful bottle, and it’s a top pairing for the kind of rustic, homemade food we just can’t get enough of. Hearty beef or lamb burgers, ragu sauces and dishes like lasagna, eggplant parmigiana, stuffed mushrooms or strong cheeses will all hit the spot perfectly. It’s also excellent with chilli con carne, meat and root vegetable stews, and anything with pumpkin or roast sweet potato and smoked paprika.
