Details
Grüner Veltliner is one of a handful of grape varieties that are native to Austria, and is certainly the most well-recognised on the international stage. This wine they call Terrassen, due to the fact that the vines that the grapes come from are grown on sloped terraces. You'll find notes of white pear, lime and grapefruit alongside more savoury characters like radish, celery leaf and white pepper. It has plenty of acidity and is really fresh and energetic.

If you’re exploring the possibilities of a new (well, new for you) wine region or country, it’s a good idea to start with the very best. Austria has been producing high quality wines for centuries, but it feels as though this central European country has only really found its voice on the international stage in the past decade or so. And yet, what a voice that is! Crisp, elegant, mineral-rich white wines are the order of the day… and few Austrian wineries produce them quite as well as Domane Wachau. Situated in the iconic and world-famous Wachau region, this traditional Austrian winery deals with vineyards which are themselves littered with UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the vines which grow among them ain’t bad, either. Indeed, Domane Wachau is a winery which cares deeply about the standards and international reputation of the Austrian wine scene. That’s why it has perfected the art of producing the country’s signature wine - Gruner Veltliner - and brings out bottles which show off the absolute racy majesty this ancient grape is capable of producing. The Austrian wine scene is by its very nature obsessive about estate production, and even though Domane Wachau is one of the larger wine businesses in the country, it’s still run in much the same way as one of its smaller counterparts. Every step of the process takes place on the estate, and precision, control and attention to detail ensures a perfect product, every single time.

Pairing guide
We can’t hide the fact that we love our white wines crisp, bright and brilliantly biting, and this delicious Austrian Grüner Veltliner hits all those notes and more. As for food pairing, this wine is a beautiful match for bitter greens like broccoli, Brussels sprout, kale and cabbage, as well as with spring vegetable pasta and rice dishes. Coconut milk-based curries, ginger and chicken noodles, fish and seafood with plenty of fresh herbs, and anything with a solid spritz of lime will do very nicely indeed.

Wachau, Austria
The Wachau is a picturesque wine region situated along the Danube River in Austria, renowned for producing some of the world's finest white wines. The region is known for its steep terraced vineyards and unique microclimates, which allow for the cultivation of grape varietals like Grüner Veltliner and Riesling which exhibit a distinctive minerality and acidity. The Wachau is divided into three sub-regions, each with its own soil types, wine styles, and characteristics. Visitors can take a scenic drive along the river and stop at local wineries for tastings, or explore charming towns and historic landmarks that dot the landscape. The region is also known for its culinary delights, with local specialities like Wachauer Marillenknödel (apricot dumplings) and hearty regional dishes that pair perfectly with the area's world-class wines.
