Details
The ‘Cigûeña’ edition of Encima’s Mencia collection is a great way to introduce our Good Pair Days customers to the wonderful world of Mencia. This wine looks superb in the glass with a bright, purple hue. The wine is deep and dark with spiced plums, rich blackberries and mocha overtones. There is a nice lick of oak to wrap things up nicely too.
The Encima winery is located in the mountainous village of Molinaseca, in the region of Bierzo, in the northwest of Spain. Molinaseca is found on the French Way, which is the most popular walking path of El Camino de Santiago! So not only are the roads well trodden, and perhaps a little holy, but they are home to succulent, modern wines. The winery has been producing fantastic wines from local varieties for over 80 years. Some of the vineyards were planted even earlier than that, going back over 100 years! Benito Otero, the grandfather of the current generation in charge, tended these vines, as his grandchildren do now. Like back then, everything is still done by hand and organically. These days, husband and wife Manuel and Merche run the operation, in a similar way to how it was done in the 1940s. With one eye on the future, their children learn the secrets of the grapes and the business. And so the tradition continues...

Pairing guide
The more Mencía wines we try, the deeper we fall for this most characterful red wine style. It’s a brilliant food pairing option to explore, too - you’ll find excellent results with heartier red meat dishes like slow-cooked lamb and bean stews, classic casseroles like bourguignon and goulash, and especially with game dishes or with offal like lamb’s liver. Chorizo recipes, barbecued beef or racks of ribs, and mushroom risotto with parmesan and porcini will also provide stunning pairings to enjoy.

Wine region
Bierzo, Spain
Ah, Bierzo, Spain - the exception to the rule. Besides Bierzo, Spanish reds are often associated with big, oaky, high abv hammers made from Tempranillo and Garnacha. Listen, there’s nothing wrong with that, dad! But if you’re looking for something a little more elegant, medium-bodied and finessed, look northwest to Spain’s most exciting region, Bierzo – just off the El Camino de Santiago (for the spiritual among us).
For the last 15 years, the Mencía grape has been giving Bierzo a major makeover! Mencía (related to cool-again Cabernet Franc) is pure fruited, mid-weight, with delicate balance and structure, making this wine a ‘drink now with or without food’ style.
Speaking of style. If you want more acid from Tempranillo, less ABV from Garnacha but still want to run with the bulls. Refresh your cellar with a stylish Mencía from Bierzo; you can keep the New Balance 530s, ‘they’re in’ and super practical along the Camino! Amen!
