Details
Wonderfully vibrant and aromatic, like inhaling the perfume of the colour purple. Pure essence of violets here. You may expect a whack of tannin - as its rather inky in colour - but the surprise and delight here is in its restraint. Sure, its almost full bodied, yet not quite, tucked into a shapely, slinky bodysuit, with juicy acidity and a linger of that initial aromatic component. Lush and long.

Venturing to Victoria's stunning Alpine Valley region, you'll find Billy Button Wines - and in more than one location (!) Both in the mountainous foothills of Bright and in the nearby quaint village of Myrtleford, where the winery is. While only a relatively 'new' brand (est. 2014) the owners, Jo Marsh and Glenn James are wine industry legends and visionaries who pursued their dream in Billy Button, tending to an incredibly diverse range of grape varieties not even the wine team at GPD are familiar with! From Schioppettino to Refosco, Manseng to Verduzzo, it's a wonderland of discovery - and 'Billy Button' is truly unstoppable. If you've a keen eye for flowers, you'll notice the botanical illustration on the label, are 'Billy Buttons' - bouncy yellow balls of goodness that colour the mountain tops of the gorgeous Alpine Valleys. These flowers (Craspedia to be correct) are a native daisy and create a sea of yellow during the warmer months, blanketing the mountains of their stunning wine growing region.

Pairing guide
It’s really exciting to see grape varietals like Durif making their way slowly into the mainstream, and bringing all that character, history, and flavour with them. This bottle from Billy Button is a fantastic example of what Durif does best, and when it comes to food pairings, you’ve got some exciting options to pick from. All that tannin calls from deeply savoury flavours - rib-eye steaks, roast topside of beef, and full-flavoured cheddar or blue cheese are all obvious choices to start with. Barbecued eggplant, wild mushroom and truffle dishes will work, as will lamb or beef kofta, smoked seitan, and miso-glazed vegetables.

Alpine Valleys, Australia
In north-east Victoria, neighbouring Beechworth and King Valley regions is scenic Alpine Valley. It is quite the tourist destination with year-round resort activities at Mt Hotham, Mt Buffalo and Falls Creek. The main varieties here are Prosecco, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the cooler lofty areas, while Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon perform in the warmer lower elevations. Vineyard elevations here range between 155m-320m, but the highest point in the region is 1972m above sea level for scale! Alpine Valley is most certainly continental, with a favourably big difference between day and night temperatures. Careful site selection is critical here, vignerons favour slopey hillsides with optimum airflow to minimise the threat of frost in Spring - during flowering and Autumn frost around harvest season.
