Details
A wine with muscle and power, and no lack of confidence. This big boy really impresses with a complex mix of black and blue fruits like mulberry and dark cherries. It is powerful, inky and dense, with velvet-smooth tannins complementing a rich palate filled with vanilla, chocolate and a hint of coconut.

Origin: The Isere region of Eastern France. Mainly Grown In: Famous in France, but more likely to be found in the USA or Australia these days. Key Facts: Durif is a semi-obscure grape that is a natural cross between the noble grape Shiraz and a far less well-known variety Peloursin. Although only a few token plantings remain in France today, Durif is both successful and popular in Australia where it makes characterful, pitch-black wines. Even long-term Shiraz fans are recognising the appeal of the incredibly dark, powerful wines from Durif. In fact, it's often blended with Shiraz. Durif offers up aromas of mostly black fruit flavours, ranging from blackberry and blueberry to slightly deeper black cherry. It is generally intense and inky, being a late-ripening variety, it spends additional time on the vine, concentrating the flavours. It responds well to oak-aging. Fun Fact: Durif is also known as "Petite Sirah". However, the grape has no genetic connection to Syrah, and there's certainly nothing small about the way this wine tastes!

Pairing guide
This is a serious wine, with loads of dense fruit and a lovely soft texture. It really lends itself to pairing with rich red meat dishes that have a kick of spice to them, so think things like beef Massaman curry, roast lamb with star anise, or a restaurant-quality dish of venison with chocolate and beetroot. It also really loves meaty vegetable dishes, like szechuan eggplant or roast pumpkin, so play around with it and don't be afraid of flavour!

Riverina, Australia
The Riverina wine region is one of the three that is the backbone of the Australian wine industry, alongside the Riverland and Murray Darling. The region has a hot and dry climate with long summers and cool winters, making it ideal for growing grapes. The home of Riverina is Griffith where there is a wide range of wines produced from classic Shiraz and Chardonnay to one of the most recognised wines in Australia, the De Bortoli Noble One.
