Details
This is just great. Is anybody looking for a super light-bodied, Pinot-esque red? Then look no further than Sebestyén's Kadarka (the Hungarian name for Gamza). This pup is incredibly light, weighing in at just 11.5% abv this boasts notes of wonderfully fresh wild strawberry, pink bubblegum and white truffle. A stunning account of eastern Europe's answer to Pinot Noir.
The Sebestyén winery is run by Csilla and Csaba Sebestyén, partners in crime who produce outstanding wine in Hungary's southern wine region of Szekszárd - a place where vines have been planted since the Roman times. The pair and their team work with a mix of indigenous grape varieties and some more internationally recognised ones (Merlot, Cabernet Franc) across their 12.5 hectares of vineyards. Sebestyén focuses on various single vineyard plots and has a meticulous approach to their vineyard management. The family-run estate is managed entirely by hand, and every year they make sure that 'green harvesting' is carried out. This is a technique that essentially reduces the yield of a vine; less grapes, yes, but a greater concentration of fruit and by virtue, a better quality of wine. Naturally the Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch in Austria) red grape is a stalwart at Sebestyén (and in much of Hungary). This grape is vinified in a range of styles and has the potential to produce some seriously good juice. Amongst their range of local grape types is the Cserszegi fűszeres variety; a largely unknown grape type outside of Hungary and capable of producing attractive white wines with an exotic aromatic profile.

Pairing guide
You just can’t beat a bottle of Kadarka when dinner time comes around and I say dinner time but what I mean is anytime. This gorgeous offering definitely knows how to satisfy the senses. We always love pairing Kadarka with roast chicken thighs, traditional stews like cassoulet and goulash, and with a deeply savoury mushroom stroganoff. However, it’s every bit as tasty with a ratatouille or chunky vegetable soup, and will even work nicely with butter chicken, tikka masala, or other rich-but-mild Indian curry!

Wine region
Szekszárd, Hungary
Szekszárd is located in Hungary just outside the capital of Budapest. The main variety planted is kékfrankos, a.k.a Blaufränkisch as well as classic Bordeaux varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Kadarka, once the dominant grape, comprises only five percent of the vineyards today. The wine that has previously been well-known is Bulls-blood, where Szekszárd is one of the two regions that can label their wine with this iconic label. Post Soviet Union era, there has been a rise of smaller, family run wineries to help steer things in the right direction.
