Details
This is a rare grape variety that largely grows exclusively in the Ionian Islands of Greece. Not to be mistaken with Ribolla found in Italy's Friuli, this is a noble grape, exemplified in this stunning wine here, which displays ripe lemon and nashi pear character. Lo-fi and minimal intervention, there is a slither of funk at work here, which riffs perfectly against the backdrop of keen acidity and freshness.

Founded by Panos Sarris in 2016, this winery has quickly become renowned for its award-winning wines, beautiful vineyards, and warm hospitality. Panos Sarris, drawing from his sommelier background, crafts exceptional red, white, and rosé wines using locally grown grapes and traditional techniques, under a relatively minimal intervention banner. Sarris Winery's philosophy revolves around producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of Kefalonia. With sustainable practices in both vineyard management and winemaking, each small-batch wine is meticulously crafted to showcase the best characteristics of the grapes and the land. The result is a range of complex, elegant wines bursting with flavour. We have been on the hunt for some killer Robola (grape variety) wines for some time, so when we finally came across Panos' wines, there was only one thing to do!

Pairing guide
If you haven’t yet fallen in love with Robola wines, you’re far from alone - this lesser known variety is yet to really pick up steam outside of the Mediterranean, but it’s only a matter of time before more and more people are seduced by its many, many charms… so it’s best to get ahead of the queue! Like so many wines of its type, it’s a great bottle for pairing with lighter lunch dishes and picnic favourites like bruschetta, tinned fish with fresh pesto, pasta salads and cheese croquetas. Seafood, roast chicken or turkey, and chicken shawarma sandwiches would also work brilliantly, as would a homemade halloumi wrap with a spicy dressing. Nice!

Wine region
Kefalonia, Greece
Kefalonia, an island in the Ionian Sea, Greece, boasts a rich wine-growing tradition dating back to ancient times. According to Homer, Kefalonian wines were esteemed for their ability to foster friendships and build alliances. The island's mild, somewhat rainy climate and the favourable growing conditions offered by Mount Enos contribute to the unique character of its wines. The primary grape variety cultivated in Kefalonia is Robola, which is indigenous to the island and is known for producing the top wines. Other varieties include Mavrodaphne and Muscat, each contributing to the production of distinctive wines with Protected Designation of Origin (P.D.O.) and Protected Geographical Indication (P.G.I.) status. Kefalonia is home to several local wineries, where visitors can explore the ancient art of winemaking and indulge in wine-tasting tours.
