Details
This is an intriguing wine that lends itself to those who like their reds on the slightly more natural side of the spectrum. Bright red cherries dominate, but expect some funk and gamey character, with notes of rose and tar, smoke and animal hide. Interesting stuff at this price point.

Origin: It’s believed that the first wines made were in the Médoc region, in the west of France. Mainly Grown In: France leads the way here, with Bordeaux the big one. Also California, South Australia, central and northern Italy, plus Argentina. Key Facts: No matter how mer-little you know about wine, chances are you’ve heard of Merlot (pronounced “Mer-low”). Merlot is like a Golden Retriever; dependable (it ripens reliably well), lovable (especially for its chocolatey and soft plummy flavours), and able to get along with pretty much everyone (a champion in some of the most prized blends on the planet). Merlot is so approachable and smooth that it is often described as tasting “velvety”. Not sure when you last licked some velvet, but we did, and the Merlot definitely tasted much better than velvet. However, velvety is a fair way to describe the soft cushion-like comfort of how Merlot rolls across the palate — yum! Fun Fact: Because Merlot wine is so sensitive to light, Merlot-based wines tinge orange on the rim. The orange rim is the telltale sign of Merlot vs. Cabernet Sauvignon.

Pairing guide
Everyone loves a top bottle of Merlot with their dinner, and this release from Colle dei Cipressi captures everything we love about this timeless variety. It’s a great choice for pairing with roasted root vegetables, beetroot soup and mushroom or vegetable risotto. It’s also superb with slow-cooked meats, casseroles and stews, roast poultry with all the trimmings, and French classics like bourguignon, coq au vin and onion soup. Steaks, sausages, burgers and meatballs will all work well, and it’s even good with a roast side of salmon with Mediterranean veggies. Nice!
