Details
Golden in the glass, this Airén sits on the richer, nuttier side of the spectrum. Complete with notes of wax and white florals underpinned with a lovely green apple tang, this is an easy-drinking white, that works well with a range of dishes.

Origin: Spain. Mainly Grown In: Spain. Key Facts: Airén is arguably the world’s most prolific grape variety that you've never heard of. It is almost entirely planted in Spain, in particular across the La Mancha plateau where in the summer months, it gets super warm, and Airén has the ability to cope with the heat very well, without losing too much acidity. It is traditionally used for much of Spain’s brandy production (which is why you might not have heard of it before) but when it is treated well and given the respect it deserves, it has the ability to make easy-drinking and approachable white wines that blend well with a number of local, and more international grape varieties in Spain. Fun Fact: Airén is often used in the production of Spanish brandy, where it is distilled, instead of fermented.

Pairing guide
We make no secret of our ever-deepening love for Airén wines - there’s something about this Spanish white wine style that immediately transports our senses to the Med! We adored how well this wine paired with a dish of grilled sardines with potatoes and blanched samphire, but it will work just as well with pretty much any fish dish imaginable. Shellfish will be excellent too, as will Iberian favourites like vegetable paella or patatas bravas, and salads featuring tropical fruits or salty cheeses.

Wine region
Jumilla, Spain
Despite its hot and harsh conditions, Jumilla has a long history of wine production, with evidence of vine cultivation dating back to the ancient Roman Empire. The Jumilla wine region is located in the southeast of Spain, in the province of Murcia (2.5 hours drive South of Valencia). Jumilla is hot and dry! Thankfully, the high lime content of the soils retains the necessary moisture for often unirrigated vines; the other saving grace is the elevation between 400-800m – offering cool evening respite for the vines. The region is particularly famous for its powerful and rich red wines such as Monastrell and international varieties Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. White varieties like Airen, Macabeo, Pedro Ximénez and Malvasia are also worth a look!
