Details
Primocolle is meant to be Villa Cerna's more easygoing Chianti Classico. But don't be fooled by its seductive Tuscan whispers - instead this substantial red combines ripe red cherry fruits with a black olive and dark earth savouriness and life-enriching tannins for days. A hearty Sangiovese to take you on an Italian holiday with each glass.

It's hard not to feel the romance at Villa Cerna. Located at the gateway to the legendary Chianti Classico region not far from Siena, with steep hillsides of vines spreading out in front of you, every day feels like wedding season. But there's more to this part of Italy than overpriced villas, gelato hangovers (this is a thing) and sunburn from the hot Tuscan sun. Instead, this is the home of the great grape Sangiovese, the backbone of Chianti's effortlessly drinkable red wines. Villa Cerna's history is grand, too, driven by the restless Cecchi family's quest to keep reinventing the Italian wine styles. Housed in a reborn monastery that dates back to 1100 CE, and surrounded by olive trees first planted in 1001 CE to celebrate the last millennium (yes, 1000yr-old olive trees), this Sangiovese hotspot lobs up a delight of red-berried Chianti that promises to be vibrant and bright, yet dry and savoury enough to sustain through even the most cliched Tuscan nuptials.

Pairing guide
There’s something about a good Sangiovese wine that immediately transports us to the sunny hillscapes of Tuscany - few other red wine styles are so evocative, so delicious, and so brilliantly versatile when it comes to food pairing. Tomatoes and Sangiovese are always a match made in paradise, and we loved this wine with an Italian-style tomato tart, a hearty ragu sauce featuring beef shin or duck, and it’s also excellent with family favourites like spaghetti bolognese, shepherd’s pie or a classic lasagna.

Chianti Classico, Italy
Chianti is a world-famous wine region in Italy and is home to the country's mightiest grape variety: Sangiovese. The region is characterised by its rolling hills, warm temperatures, and well-drained soils, which provide the ideal growing conditions for the grapes. Chianti has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 14th century, and is now one of Italy's most well-known wine regions. The Chianti Classico denomination, established in 1716, is one of Italy's oldest and most respected wine designations, guaranteeing the quality and origin of the wine. Whether enjoyed on its own or paired with traditional Tuscan cuisine, Chianti is a must-try for any wine lover.
