Details
Cracking open this benchmark Sauv feels like sticking your nose in a passionfruit bowl. There's an array of aromatic delights here too - guava, lime and lemongrass to the fore before a big punchy palate of crisp, dry and lingering flavours. No need to ask Siri what Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc should taste like, just dive into this!

Vavasour is the OG. This Marlborough producer was the founding winery of the Awatere Valley sub-region - they literally put it on the map - taking this part of NZ from a gigantic sheep farm established back in the 1890s to a pioneering new region with vines that now date all the way back to 1986 (which is seriously old for New Zealand). After almost four decades, no one is surprised that the brand custodians, the Foley family - with Chief Winemaker Stu Marfell - are all over the Marlborough brief. We're talking punchy Sauv Blanc, mineral Pinot Noir, and the most luxurious Marlborough Pinot Gris around. What really ups that character and intensity is the Awatere Valley itself - it's a cool, windy, sunny and super dry part of NZ, with huge swings between day and night temps. All of that means a)you need a jacket/many layers, b)it's the perfect conditions for grapes to build up oceans of flavour and lots of natural fresh acidity.

Pairing guide
The team at Vavasour definitely caught our attention with this release of a stunningly zesty and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, which is sure to satisfy the senses with its crisp character and beautifully bright flavours. It’s a great wine for pairing with all kinds of white fish, seafood and shellfish dishes, as well as with grilled chicken breast salads, turkey noodles, spicy Southeast Asian cuisine and fried rice and tofu dishes. Green vegetables like snow peas and asparagus are also a must-try option.

Wine region
Marlborough, New Zealand
Marlborough is by far and away the jewel in New Zealand's winemaking crown. Situated at the northern tip of the South Island, Marlborough is home to one of the world's most celebrated and popular styles of wine: Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The region surmises the natural beauty that New Zealand boasts and is now home to over 500 wine producers of varying sizes, from epic, large-scale operations to small, boutique craft producers. Naturally, the region is celebrated for its zesty, pungent styles of Sauvignon Blanc, but the wine train doesn't stop there. Marlborough is also celebrated for very high-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (the latter being some of the most underrated wines in the region). You will also find smaller pockets of Viognier, Riesling and Pinot Gris planted here. Marlborough represents almost 75% of all wine produced in New Zealand.
