Details
Shaw & Smith generally make two Pinot Noirs each year, one from the Adelaide Hills and one from Tasmania. In some years however they produce a third wine, Incognito. In 2018 this comes from the Tasmanian vineyard, and is of excellent quality. Loads of bright upfront fruit, a whisper of wet soil and earthiness and then a lovely combination of juicy acidity and soft tannins to close. Very succulent and moreish.

Shaw & Smith is an iconic vineyard and winery in the Adelaide Hills, established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They own 2 vineyards in the region, but recently ventured south to purchase a property in southern Tasmania. They have a total focus on growing the best possible grapes, managing vineyards sustainably, and valuing vine health, soil health, and low yields. In the pursuit of quality, all grapes continue to be hand-picked, and the wines are fermented, aged and bottled on site at the winery in the Adelaide Hills subregion of Balhannah. The wines are vibrant, medium bodied expressions of their varieties that reflect their sites and region. In recent years they have fully committed to their long-held sustainability beliefs by converting to organic viticulture, resulting in healthier vines and fresher, more persistent wines. Now iconic, the winery is a beacon of quality for all its varieties. Freshness and elegance are their hallmarks, ad the wines are of superior quality. Great stuff all round.

Pairing guide
This beautiful Pinot Noir from Shaw & Smith is yet another big-hitter for the winery, and once again, we’ve been really impressed with the versatility and food-friendliness of this juicy red wine. It’s always tempting to stick with meaty classics like boeuf bourgignon when serving Pinot Noir (and make no mistake, that’s a great pairing for this wine), but why not give this wine a try with some roast salmon, or lightly seared tuna? It works wonderfully with fattier fish dishes, and it’s a combo we’re really fond of here at Good Pair Days. Pasta dishes with duck or game are also going to be delicious, and if you can’t be bothered to cook, we reckon it’s going to be awesome with a takeaway pizza, too!

Wine region
Coal River Valley, Australia
Coal River Valley is a wine region located in southern Tasmania, an hour drive from Hobart. There is a wave of high quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir coming out of the region with waves of mainland wineries setting up in this truly premium region. The region receives a good amount of rainfall and has typical Tassie weather which endears it to a cool climate style. There is a lovely array of family wineries who have been in the region since the 1970s along with the influx of larger wineries who are snapping up land where possible. A region to watch as the growth and quality continues to rise.
