Details
Hamish sources the grapes for this Riesling from the Lambert Vineyard at Gundaroo, which is part of the Canberra District (although it sits in NSW, just to get really confusing). Even now after a few years maturing, this super citrussy wine is seriously taut and fresh, all preserved lemon energy and a zingy backbone, with a little extra textural punch thanks to a portion of the grapes fermented on their skins. You want refreshment? This Riesling has it in droves.
Mada is a pretty new operation, run by Hamish Young, who previously cut his teeth at famed winery Eden Road. This is Hamish's first foray out on his own, and he's off to a great start. Since 2016 he's been bottling slippery, juicy, eminently drinkable wines, with a focus on Riesling and Shiraz. He sources fruit from some great sites across the Canberra and Hilltops regions, and whilst his first releases were a smash hit with their colourful branding, the results get better and better with the newer wines His wines show a fresher and more modern side of NSW wine, all about vibrant fruit and easy drinking. His gentle use of lees maturation and whole bunches generate texture without sacrificing freshness. There's an inherent spiciness to all the reds, but they aren't heavy at all - just perfumed and well balanced. Hamish is definitely a producer to watch for the future - one of the new crop shaking up the regional scene!

Pairing guide
We love a great Riesling here at Good Pair Days, and this beautiful bottle from Mada Wines ticks all the right boxes when it comes to freshness and balance. It’s a supremely appropriate pairing for Thai and other southeast Asian cuisines - anything with coriander, chilli, ginger, and lime will work wonders with this wine. It’s also going to be a great match for pork sausages, chicken or veal escalopes, and grilled salmon, and will work very nicely with salads featuring apples, nuts, or green beans, too.

Wine region

Canberra District, Australia
Canberra wine district is located in and around the Australian Capital Territory. Apart from one producer in ACT, this wine district is commonly associated with NSW regions Murrumbateman, Bungendore and Collector. Being inland, the region has an extreme continental climate, with very warm days and typically cold dry nights even in Summer. Riesling thrives in this climate, the stand-out variety among the crisp whites available here. But it's the cool-climate Shiraz that steals the show. Actually, Canberra wine district has a well-established reputation for one of Australia’s best Shiraz – notably Clonakilla’s Shiraz Viognier.
The wine region is a bit of a best-kept secret, if only Sydneysiders knew it to be equidistant to Hunter Valley! Canberra wine bars and restaurants here have generated quite the buzz in recent years, and with vineyards just a 30 minute drive from Canberra city; why not enjoy both in a day? Halliday hitters include Clonakilla, Helm (Riesling), and Lark Hill (Gruner Veltliner), but don’t miss out on the envelope-pushing producers such as Ravensworth, Mallaluka, and Mada Wines! Don’t sleep on the Canberra Wine District!
