Details
Central Otago's Pisa range is famous for lobbing up Pinot Noir with extra flavour, and this Lake Hayes Pinot is a bold thing. Dark plum and cooked strawberry fruit and then a bit of a spicy edge to, well, spice things up. At every turn, this is fruit-forward and plush, yet not heavy red, for your immediate drinking pleasure.
Lake Hayes is an offshoot of the Amisfield winery, with this label named after the picturesque, duck-filled lake in front of the winery in NZ's Central Otago region. Stylistically, the wines follow a similar vibe to Amisfield, with bold Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and other bits and pieces to the fore. Where the Lake Hayes wines split is that the grapes come from across the Pisa Range sub-region rather than just the organic Amisfield estate vineyards - it's like an away game, but for Kiwi Pinot Noir. What makes this part of the world so unique is the climate - Central Otago sits on the 45th parallel, one of the world's most southerly wine regions with hot, dry summers and bitterly cold winters. At Amisfield/Lake Hayes, the secret is picking the perfect vineyard sites taking advantage of the endless summer sunshine while seeking shelter from Antarctic winds. The outcome of that grapegrowing balancing act is next-level intensity and plushness, especially in the Pinot Noir wines.

Pairing guide
The winemakers at Lake Hayes take real pride in the production of their wonderful Pinot Noir, and there’s no escaping this wine’s myriad charms and impressive food-pairing versatility. It’s a great bottle to serve alongside warming stews and casseroles featuring melt-in-the-mouth cuts of beef and lamb, as well as with duck legs braised in red wine and spices, pork belly with a sticky glaze, or barbecued ribs with a heap of chips. We also loved this wine with roast beetroot salads, eggplant parmigiana and veggies like pumpkin, squash and sweet potato, and it’s even going to be good with Mediterranean-style roast salmon with red capsicum and zucchini.

Wine region
Central Otago, New Zealand
New Zealand's Central Otago region is a cool climate haven on the country's South Island which, over the years has become something of a Mecca for one of the most complex, beguiling red grapes in the world: Pinot Noir. Home to some of the most southerly vineyards in the world, Central Otago's wines have gained cult status of late, often being compared as one of (if not) the best producers of Pinot Noir outside of its spiritual home of Burgundy in France. The region, with its dramatic scenery, is complete with vineyards planted on mountain slopes in some of the most stunning wine-growing areas in the wine world. But it's not just Pinot Noir that gets all of the attention. High-quality Riesling is also made in Central Otago by a handful of the region's family-owned, small, boutique producers.
