Details
Mudgee reds are famously earthy and savoury, and this Grattai red has the earthiness dialled up. Sourced from the oldest vines on the estate, this is all about dark plums, chocolate, coffee grounds and this elegant, refined savoury style. Full-bodied, dry and hearty, but with a sense of class too.

Moving to the country and buying a vineyard is everyone's wine dream, right? For Anna and Norbert Krebs, they kicked that goal and made it a reality, leaving many years of corporate life to buy a 100-acre property in Mudgee. This estate, which they renamed Grattai Grove, came with 2,000 olive trees and a patch of forty-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines that every Mudgee winemaker wanted. But why stop there? Since buying the farm, Anne and Norbert have planted more grape varieties and added sheep, cows, donkeys, goats, chooks, cats, and dogs to what they call 'our little slice of paradise'. Oh, and the wines? They're seriously smart, no doubt helped by the pair enlisting the ever-clever Mudgee wine guy James Manners for a little Midas touch in the winery.

Pairing guide
The team at Grattai Grove never fails to deliver the goods when it comes to characterful red wines, and this Cabernet Sauvignon is right up there with the best of the bunch. All that depth and power calls for real umami-bomb recipes for pairing with - we’re talking miso-slicked eggplant, roast beef with porcini, lamb shanks with an anchovy and garlic glaze, and anything with slow-cooked duck legs and roast root vegetables. Strong cheeses, brisket and homemade beef or bean burgers will also provide excellent combos to explore.

That means the grapes get a little extra time to ripen and develop flavors that'll knock your socks off. And boy, do they ever! Mudgee is famous for its full-bodied red wines, like Shiraz, Cab Sav, and Merlot, which pack a punch and leave you wanting more. But don't overlook their refreshing whites, like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, which are perfect for sipping on a sunny day.
