Details
This Zweigelt (an Austrian variety) comes from Ritoznoj, in the north east of Slovenia. Full of flavour but low in the alcohol and weight, it's like a hypothetical cross between Nebbiolo and Gamay. Violets and black cherries give way to fennel and meaty overtones. Zesty and fresh on the finish. Could easily be drunk chilled!

The Slovenian 'natural' wine scene is a small but emerging one. So most of the interesting winemakers seem to know each other pretty well! Janko Bogatic has been working in vineyards since the age of 10, however has only just begun releasing wines under his own label. For a long time he grew grapes for his friend and winemaking mentor, Nick Gee - of Heaps Good Wine Co fame. He certainly looks up to Nick for inspiration and in many ways mirrors his winemaking ethos. There's a lot of respect not only for the vineyards (sustainably farmed, only hand picked etc), but for the integrity of the grape varieties themselves. Many producers in Slovenia look to 'international' varieties like Sauvignon and Cabernet, but Janko believes in the authenticity of the grapes that have grown in his country for centuries. The results speak for themselves - this is a fun label with a bright future.

Pairing guide
This beautiful red made from Austria's hero grape, Zweigelt, is such a spicy number that really works well for a range of cuisines. Unlike many red wines, this one is going to pair really nicely with meatier fish dishes of salmon and tuna, and would also be great with Spanish-style spicy shellfish dishes, cooked in a tomato or paprika sauce. We also love drinking this wine with duck and roast chicken, and it’s also a great pairing for sausages, tomato-based pasta dishes, and even some Mexican beef classics!

Ritoznoj, Slovenia
The Ritoznoj wine region is located in the northeast part of Slovenia, near the border with Austria. The vineyard landscapes can be characterised by its hilly landscape, which features dramatic slopes and rocky soils. The most popular wines produced in Ritoznoj are white wines such as Furmint, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Gris, which are known for their crisp acidity, minerality, and aromas of citrus and tropical fruits. The region is also known for its sparkling wines made using the traditional method. The top wine regions each have their own styles, for instance Jeruzalem-Ormoz is known for its aromatic white wines, while Radgona-Kapela is known for its sparkling wines, and Ljutomer-Ormoz is known for its crisp and refreshing white wines.
