Details
The 2017 vintage of Château les Grands Chênes is a 60/40 split of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is upfront and fruit driven, highly expressive with raspberries, blackberries and cassis notes along with a touch of oak and vanilla shining through.
Château les Grands Chênes is one of the key reference wines for how Medoc red wines should taste and is often sought after by wine collectors. The winery is owned by Bernard Magrez who has owned it since 1998, and is located close to the Garonne where there are 34 hectares of vineyards. The vines are 40 years old and a combination of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Medoc is the region that sits closest to the Atlantic ocean and has a larger growing area than the smaller sub-regions that sit below it. The wines are made by a consultant winemaker, Michel Rolland, who although based in Bordeaux makes wines across the world with an eye for attracting the more modern styles of wine that are popular in the USA. This winemaking style makes these wines more fruit forward and robust and will be well received by those who love full-bodied Barossa and McLaren Vale wines. These wines have been aged carefully in Bordeaux for the last few years and are only available in extremely short supply.

Amazingly versatile and undoubtedly delicious, this Merlot Blend from the ever-reliable Château les Grands Chênes truly encapsulates the finer features of its awe-inspiring terroir. It’s a top-notch food pairing wine, and will match very well with a massive range of red meat dishes - especially slow-cooked beef or lamb stews - as well as with Middle Eastern dishes of grains and herbs, chicken tagine, sausage and mash, meat pies and pastries, homemade burgers, and hearty tomato ragu. Amazing!

Wine region
Bordeaux, France
Bordeaux is a wine region located in southwestern France, known for producing some of the world's most coveted and expensive wines. The main takeaway is that Bordeaux wines are a blend of grape varieties. Sometimes called noble varieties, this includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère. This ‘Bordeaux blend’ style is emulated worldwide from Australia to South America!
Key regions can be divided into two areas, the Left Bank and the Right Bank. The Left Bank includes Médoc, comprised of sub-regions - Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe, and Margaux. These wines are Cabernet Sauvignon dominant with serious tannin structure for the long term. The Right Bank is known for softer wines made of Merlot. The top right-bank area is Pomerol, home to the iconic Château Pétrus with honourable mentions to Saint-Emilion and Fronsac.
