Details
An intense and powerful expression of Tempranillo (also known as Tinto Fino), this wine is named for the clone (a genetically identical grape) that knows how to adapt best to the Ribera del Duero climate of hot, dry summers and long, harsh winters. Concentrated berries, liquorice, chocolate and fruit tannins abound; it finishes long and begs a chunky morsel of food!
In the last decade, modern Spanish winery Casa Rojo has made a name for itself internationally, thanks to its award-winning wines of exceptional quality, as well as the brilliant, colourful artistic labels and witty names. This creative spirit imbues the wines as well as the packaging; choosing to work not just in one region, but across Spain, currently producing wines from seven different areas. In each of these carefully-chosen regions, the emphasis is on native grape varieties, limited production and capturing the essence of the particular terroir. Casa Rojo was founded in 2010 by husband and wife team José Luis Gómez and Laura Muñoz, the oenologists and directors of Casa Rojo. Their passion for the world of wine led them to embark on a wine tour of Spain with the goal of representing the most important Spanish terroirs and native grape varieties. A mixture of modernity and respect for tradition informs the decision-making, and so far is being met with success and absolutely delicious wines!

Pairing guide
Tempranillo has to be right up there with our favourite red wine styles, not least because it’s a superb wine to drink alongside some of our most loved dishes. This type of wine served with Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes is always a welcome sight, but it’s also going to be fantastic with meat pies, Spanish-style stews, barbecued pork, lamb and beef, and anything with a good hit of smoked paprika. Polenta and other corn creations will be excellent, as will meaty pizzas, lamb burgers, blood sausage and tomato-based pasta. Delicious!

Wine region

Ribera del Duero, Spain
Ribera Del Duero is the top wine region in Castilla y León of Northern, Spain. It’s home to some of the best red wines in the world, namely the beloved Tempranillo! The region's vineyards are situated along the banks of the Duero River, which provides the perfect soil and climate for growing high-quality grapes. The wines produced in Ribera Del Duero are known for their deep colour, rich flavour, and firm persistent tannins. Tempranillo accounts for 75% of all red production, followed by Garnacha. In whites, Albillo makes up 70% of production, with Albariño and Palomino in tow. Just like the famous Rioja region, Ribera Del Duero also has ageing requirements for their reds Crianza must be matured for at least two years, Reserva wines are aged for at least three years and finally, the granddaddy Gran Reserva? These must be aged for five years (two of those years in oak) before release!
