A real powerhouse this - pleasant ripe red fruit aromas, sweet spices, a touch of leather and the faint kiss of oak.
It has very elegant and integrated savoury notes that sit wonderfully alongside the powerful fruit.
"By keeping our roots, we follow our traditions. We have commited ourselves to produce top-quality wines, developing our genuine Monastrell grape variety." This quote from the founder of Bodegas Castano gives you an insight into not only the history involved with this estate, but also the focus on one grape variety - Monastrell. The willpower, strength and determination of Ramón Castaño Santa have been necessary in his endeavour to achieve the highest quality in his wines, made using only the indigenous grape variety, Monastrell. Castaño Santa built a winery in 1950, and made plenty of wine from family vineyards, but they were always sold to others. In the early 1980s eh began bottling his own wines. At first, this approach was considered rather adventurous in the conservative wine world in Yecla, since there was an easy market for selling wine in bulk. But the goal was clear - quality. The incorporation of his three sons into the family company along the 80s, brought in a new focus aimed to consolidate the national markets and seek the international expansion. The Castaño family has always been considered a pioneer in the area, experimenting with the grape variety Monastrell to both create straight wines and blend it with other varieties, introducing the latest technology, not only in the vineyard but also in the winery, and implementing new quality systems that allow the production of high quality wines. Pairing guide
Monastrell is one of those classic red wines that, once you start experimenting with it alongside your culinary creations, you just can’t stop. It’s rustic, deep, delicious, and incredibly drinkable… and it pairs fantastically with one-pot dishes, slow cooked meats, stews, casseroles, and all those comforting meals that are the most fun to cook and eat. It goes without saying that this really is a meat-lover’s wine; it pairs so elegantly with even the cheapest cuts of beef and lamb, and will elevate simple sausages to something of real beauty and rustic sophistication. However, we also love this wine with lentils and other pulses, meaning there’s a huge amount of versatility here to explore.
