Details
Unpretentious and versatile, this Merlot is the perfect red for any occasion. Bursting with fresh, fun flavours of red cherry, plum, bay leaf, and spice, it has a smooth medium-body and velvety tannins. A reliable wine to have on hand and enjoy while watching the rain, or chill and enjoy on a warm summer day.
Origin: It’s believed that the first wines made were in the Médoc region, in the west of France. Mainly Grown In: France leads the way here, with Bordeaux the big one. Also California, South Australia, central and northern Italy, plus Argentina. Key Facts: No matter how mer-little you know about wine, chances are you’ve heard of Merlot (pronounced “Mer-low”). Merlot is like a Golden Retriever; dependable (it ripens reliably well), lovable (especially for its chocolatey and soft plummy flavours), and able to get along with pretty much everyone (a champion in some of the most prized blends on the planet). Merlot is so approachable and smooth that it is often described as tasting “velvety”. Not sure when you last licked some velvet, but we did, and the Merlot definitely tasted much better than velvet. However, velvety is a fair way to describe the soft cushion-like comfort of how Merlot rolls across the palate — yum! Fun Fact: Because Merlot wine is so sensitive to light, Merlot-based wines tinge orange on the rim. The orange rim is the telltale sign of Merlot vs. Cabernet Sauvignon.

Pairing guide
Beautifully plush and packed full of red fruit flavours, this delicious Merlot is right up our street. As for food pairing, it pairs well with exotically spiced lamb and lighter meats such as chicken or pork tenderloin, especially when served with a fruity or berry sauce. It will also work very nicely with classic stews like bourguignon or goulash. Merlot and garlic work wonders together, so don’t be shy with this ingredient, and it’s also delicious with a crumbly cheddar and anything with stewed or roasted tomatoes.
